About the Event
Pop-Up Preschool returns in February for a celebration of love and friendship. We’ll explore the power of kindness with an interactive circle and story time, followed by a series of activities that invite children to create from the heart.
Our classes are imaginative, playful, and messy. We provide loose parts and process art experiences to maximize creative potential and make space for joyful play. Activities and materials are suitable for young children ages 2 to 5 years old.
What are Loose Parts?
Simply put, it’s stuff. Kids need movable objects of varying colors, shapes, and textures so that they can build what their minds imagine. Objects can be natural or human-made. Examples include stones, sand, twigs, shells, beads, bottle caps, twine, buttons, etc. Loose parts are used in open-ended ways, giving children the freedom to work creatively in limitless ways. Loose parts is a term coined in the seventies by an architect named Simon Nicholson who believed that people, especially children, are inherently creative. His theory has been adapted and embraced in preschools around the world.
What is Process Art?
It’s process over product. Process art is an opportunity for children to create without a predetermined end result. Value is placed on the sensory experience of making something instead of the resulting work. Process art reflects the creative choices made by children.
Why Playful Creativity Matters
Exploratory learning may appear simple or even repetitive, but meaningful play opportunities are ideal for young children’s developing brains. Important cognitive skills are at work when children experience new materials and decide how to use them. Social skills blossom when children negotiate new social situations and collaborate with peers. When we give children the agency to act on their instinct to play and create, their engagement and focus shoot through the roof. This type of play creates potent and intrinsic motivation to learn. Put all of this together in a nurturing environment? We’ve got a recipe for limitless potential.
About the Teacher
Heather White is on a mission to save the art of play. Drawing inspiration from nature, she designs pop-up preschool experiences with an emphasis on loose parts play and process art for curious children and their families. As a mom and third generation educator, Heather understands the importance of high quality early childhood education and advocates for learning opportunities that empower children. In addition to holding a degree in early childhood development, she brings experience as a preschool teacher and Tinkergarten leader to the design and implementation of classes. With thoughtful details, environmentally conscious materials, and a nurturing ambiance, Heather invites children to explore, play, and learn in their own unique ways.
